Associate Professor, Vice Dean
Patrick Chan works on machine learning, deep learning, image processing, adversarial learning, and secure machine learning.
Patrick Chan received his PhD from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009. He joined South China University of Technology in the same year and is now an Associate Professor and Vice Dean of the SHEIN-MING WU School of Intelligent Engineering. He is also one of the principal leaders of the Machine Learning and Control Team Laboratory.
His research focuses on machine learning, deep learning, image recognition, adversarial learning, and secure machine learning. He has published broadly in international journals and conferences, with an H-index of 23, and has led or participated in projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, and central university research funds. He also works closely with industry on applied research and technology transfer.
Beyond research, Patrick Chan serves the international community through editorial and professional activities. He has held editorial roles for the International Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, Information Sciences, and Advances in Computational Intelligence. He has also served IEEE SMCS as a board member and Hong Kong chapter chair, and has contributed to organizing multiple international conferences.
In teaching and supervision, he has guided students in innovation and entrepreneurship programs, Challenge Cup competitions, and undergraduate research initiatives, with students publishing in international venues. He has also received repeated recognition for teaching excellence and student mentorship.
